Stan and Ollie - The Review

A Buddy move of the highest quality.

Hollywood seems to like bringing us a new buddy movie every couple of months, most of these are quite flat and the jokes are limited.

Laurel and Hardy are one of the most loved and could be argued the original masters of the buddy movie and one of the best comedy duos of all time.

PD's Review:

Stan and Ollie tells the story of the later years in there career especially focusing on there grueling UK and Ireland tour, whilst at the same time trying to get there version of "Robin Hood" off the ground.

Steve Coogan and John.C Reilly take on the roles of Stan and Ollie, both of them are on top form and each of them give possibly one of the best performances of the solid careers (I would not be surprised for award nods later on)

When you make a film about one of the best comedy duos of all time it could be easy to fill it with a slap stick comedy tone, what S&O does so well is show the tension between the pair and the serious tone whilst also showing some of the comedy tour which we all know and love.

Its a wonderful mix and in turn makes for

a great film which never got the credit it deserved at he box office.

In parts some of the pacing is off and feels like we are skipping over a little to much.

For me I would have liked a bit more of the comedy gold, when you have 2 of the best comedy actors of our time I feel we could of shown more whilst still keeping the tone right.

Ultimately this for me will go down as one of the best films of the year that no one saw.

I hope if gets the award recognition and gives the film a public push.

GR's Review:

The untold story of the final tour of arguably the world's best comedy duo played by

John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan... I'm in!

Stan and Ollie tells the tale of the famous duo and there infamous tour of the UK hoping to do some stand-up, get some money and ultimately film a Robin Hood comedy spin off..

Only it never happens!

I went in to this film completely off guard for just how emotional it can get and the final 20 mins or so really does have you wanting to just burst out in tears, the films has a great way of showing the friendship between these two icons and while it feels a little rushed in places, the two lead actors while never acting together as a double act before pull off one of the greatest duo performances of recent times.

The film highlights some key sketches from their tours and while at first I didn't really get old time humor by the end I was laughing away.

I really did enjoy this movie and it's a lovely insight to the duo although not everything is as it seems on the outside, I won't ruin it for anyone wanting to watch it, I shall simply say sit down one evening and prepare to hit emotions from one extreme to the next.

GR's Rating - 7.5/10

Total Rating - 15.5 / 20

Solid score for what feels like hidden Gem of a movie.
